New Outlook on Life: A Profile of Rick Reyes

rick-reyesHi, my name is Rick Reyes. I am 63 years old and I live at Wildflower Court in Juneau, Alaska. It is a long term care facility. About ten years ago I was diagnosed with Cerebellar Ataxia. I have a hard time walking, my hands shake and tremble, it’s hard for me to talk, (I have slurred speech), and I see double (my eyes also flutter at times). I have been working with the physical therapy department at Wildflower Court, and I’ve started my own training routine with some assistance from them. My goal is to get out and give up this wheelchair. So far my training has helped increase my energy level, which gave me the idea to try bicycling. I researched recumbent bikes, and applied for a grant. The end result is I have a Terra Trike, and am able to go riding and have a new outlook on life.

What’s your favorite place to ride to in Juneau?
My favorite place to ride to is Twin Lakes. This is as far as I’ve been. My goal is to “see it all.”

If you had to encapsulate bicycling in one word, what would it be?
Freedom.

What do you love most about riding a bike?
What I love most is the ability to just go without having to rely on anybody.

Any words of advice for new riders?
Even if it’s hard, try it. You’ll never know what you can do until you try it. Never give up.
